Live Radio Broadcasts

Quite frequently, WAVM would "live broadcast" from outside the confines of the radio studio. Quite simply, the students would take their equipment somewhere on-location. The effort was in part to give the students the experience of broadcasting under a different set of cirumstances as well as a chance to work before the community; and, perhaps, show off a little bit. Of course, these broadcasts were also a good chance to promote the station, sell raffle tickets, and raise a little money.

The first raffle was for a ski-do. Then followed the raffling of cars, boomboxes, and vcrs--among many other items. In the past couple years, gift certificates have been offered to area Malls, allowing the winner to go on buying sprees of up to $500.

Beginning in 1996 and continuing on October 4, 1997, WAVM began broadcasting at Maynard Fest, a bazaar and circus-like event in downtown Maynard.

Returning to the Live Broadcasts, there have been many events and locations, including football and basketball games, restaurants, downtown Maynard, and even from the top of Mount Wachusett while a group of Maynard residents went skiing.

Having a live audience before you can be intimidating but that hasn't kept the students from setting up a small table with a couple turntables and a rack of tunes; because the experience can also be exhilirating. There'll surely be more Live Broadcasts in the future, so if you're in the Maynard area, listen to 91.7 FM for the next live broadcast. Then visit. The WAVM students will be happy to see you.
