A 1974 WAVM NewsletterVol. 2 No. 3, published May 1974
An Article from the Newsletter: "On April 22d, the educational radio station at Maynard High School began regular broadcasting on 91.7 on the FM dial. Thus, was realized the dream initiated eight months ago by two MHS Juniors, John Boothroyd and Richard Hurd. Working with Mr. Joseph Magno, Maynard's Director of Media Services, these two boys pooled the talents of the members of the MHS AV Club and began the long task aimed at putting Tiger Town on the air. WAVM, which will now be broadcasting on a Monday thru Friday 7 A.M. to 9 P.M. schedule, with special programming on weekends, is a credit to the initiative and patience of these fine young men and the members of Maynard's business community and private citizens who lent their support. The community of Maynard may well be proud of the efforts of the young men behind radio station WAVM who spent countless hours in fund raising activities via films for children, etc., and who with the assistance of Mr. Richard Castellano of the MHS Industrial Arts Department, actually constructed their new studio. Hopefully, the people of Maynard and surrounding communities will support the station and assist the boys with suggestions for programs of interest. The major goal of WAVM is to be a community service radio station, to bring music for all listening tastes, and to provide educational and community oriented programs involving all age levels within the schools, and all community agences outside the school. WAVM is available to all service organizations for announcements, etc. The boys at WAVM will sincerely appreciate constructive criticism of their initial efforts at programming and pledge to make WAVM a quality radio station that all will be proud of. Please directo any suggestions to the Department of Media Services at Maynard High School. Future plans also include live sports broadcasting of MHS events. One person who sincerely deserves the heartfelt thanks of the MHS AV Club is David Knight of the Digital staff. Digital is also to be thanked for lending Dave's services. Mr. Knight was solely responsible for the excellent installation of all the studio equipment and his patience and readiness to give up even weekend hours to assist the boys will always be remembered. Dave is the station's chief engineer. In addition to close to thirty officially licensed by Federal Communicationss Commission broadcasters, Radio Station WAVM boasts a complete administrative staff. Senior Diane Messier serves as the chief secretary, and at present is the only girl in the organization though several have begun studying for the FCC exams and hope to be broadcasting soon. The station's General Managers include Richard Hurd, John Boothroyd, and Bob Gately. They are responsible for decisions regarding station set-up and programming. Russ Arena is the Music Director and he is assisted by James Forster and Joe Eannuzzo. Their job centers around selection, preview, cataloging, and music preparation for all Disc Jockey shows. WAVM Sports Director is Anthony Miola and he is assisted by Chris and Brian Duggan. They give several daily sports reports, both professional and local high school, and Tomy has begun dabbling in sports editorials. Roger Alatalo is our news director and he schedules several daily reports of national, state, and local items. He and Bill Bachrach also keeps (sic) people abreast of community events. Chris Salmi, (sic) is the station's meteorologist and he is assisted by Steve Agin and Don Martin. WAVM has its own weather station and Chris, Don, and Steve actually forecast local weather. Studio Director is Don Messier who has the responsibility for managing the new studio. Leon Tyler is Director of Fund Raising activities, and the publicity Director is Jimmy Hill. Anyone having news or ideas and suggestions for WAVM should contact the appropriate Director at Maynard High School. Remember the boys want WAVM to be a community effort." Return to
